MRNet shared CISO pilot project

In recent years, several Canadian post-secondary institutions have experienced security breaches, many of which have been made public. This has created a heightened sense of awareness of cybersecurity issues in the institutions. Many IT departments do not have the resources to hire qualified full-time Chief Information Security Officer to design, implement and manage the evolution of a cybersecurity program at their institution.

To share resources, University of Winnipeg, Université de Saint-Boniface and Brandon University have partnered in a two-year pilot project, managed by MRNet, to develop a shared CISO service for their respective institutions. The shared CISO will work with the three institutions to develop the procedural, tactical and governance structure to move to a permanent solution for the entire community. This position will report to the CEO of MRNet.

We are pleased to announce that Mr. Gerrit Bos has been selected to fill the shared CISO role and has been hired by MRNet for a two-year contract term. The project will start December 1, 2020.

Mr Bos’s biography follows;

Gerrit Bos graduated with a B.Sc. in Engineering in 1987 and has been employed at the University of Guelph in successive IT positions since then. In 2009 he was appointed as the Information Security Officer, in the department of Computing and Communications Services, a position he held until his retirement. In these capacities he has led and been involved in many campus-wide projects, such as the email service, directory service, portal services, the establishing and growth of the Security Policy framework, the overall security posture of the University and the establishing of the Security Operations Centre. He holds the following certifications:

• Certificate in Security Management (CISM) from ISACA (formerly known as the Information Systems Audit and Control Association) since 2013.

• Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) with ISC2, an international non-profit membership association focused on cyber security and safety since 2016.

• Payment Card Industry Professional (PCIP) from the PCI Security Standards Council since 2018.

Gerrit has also been a staff-elected member of the Board of Governors at the University of Guelph. He served as a Staff-Alumnus representative on the Board of Governors from 1995-2000, and again from 2015 to 2020. In 2014, Gerrit graduated with an M.A. (Leadership) from the University of Guelph.

Following his retirement and a successful move to Winnipeg, Gerrit is looking forward to joining MRnet in the capacity of shared Chief Information Security Officer, helping The University of Winnipeg, Brandon University, and Université de Saint-Boniface in the achievement of their near term information security posture goals and longer term plans for a sustainable information security infrastructure.
